Hello Arizona HS and Club Track Coaches,

The upcoming USATF Coaching Education Level 1 School will be held at Alhambra HS in Phoenix, AZ on Saturday and Sunday, February 22 and 23, 2020. Attached is the flyer with details of how to sign-up.
This Level 1 School is a twenty-one (21) hour certification course with classroom instruction and hands-on training that teaches all research-based techniques for the sport of Track and Field. The Level I program covers all events in a foundation and functional manner by emphasizing fundamentals, rules, safety/risk management, and instruction techniques. Level 1 prepares individuals to coach junior high, high school, club (age group), and college-level athletes.

Level 1 Recertification Guidelines

Current certified Level 1 coaches must complete a USATF approved continuing education course each Olympic quad to maintain certification. Level 1 certification expires in the year of the Summer Olympic Games on December 31st. Individuals whom complete a school in the last 12 months of the expiring year of the quad are exempt from recertification until the subsequent quad.

Level 2 and 3 certified coaches are permanently exempt from Level 1 recertification requirements.

Qualifying Period (current certification)

January 1, 2013 – December 31, 2020

Level 1 certification issued prior to December 31, 2012 is no longer current, and coaches will need to register and attend an updated Level 1 School to attain certification.

Recertification Options

The following options have been approved by the USATF Coaching Education Committee and qualify for Level 1 recertification:

  1. Completion of a minimum of one online sports science or technical course on USATF Campus
  2. Completion of a minimum of one USATF specialty course or clinic including, Super Clinic, Learn By Doing Clinic, Cross Country Specialist Course, or Emerging Elite Coaches Camp.
  3. Attend a new Level 1 School within the current quad, but after the completion date of the original school and pass the online Level 1 exam.

No credit will be provided for any courses or clinics completed prior to Level 1 certificate date.


A recertification application will be available in the last 12 months of the current certification period in which the coach will fill out with USATF membership number, coach profile, and the chosen option from one of the three above. After submission to the National Office, the option will be verified, and an updated Level 1 certificate issued.
